Wegovy® has already changed how obesity is treated through a once-weekly injection. Now, Wegovy is entering a new phase. In early January 2026, Wegovy will become the first available daily oral GLP-1 tablet for chronic weight management, offering a pill option alongside the existing injectable form. This approval marks an important step for people who prefer an oral medication but still want the benefits of a GLP-1 therapy. The Wegovy oral pill was approved by the FDA on December 22, 2025.
What Is It Prescribed For?
The oral Wegovy tablet is prescribed for long-term weight management in adults when used with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. It is approved for:
- Adults with obesity
- Adults with overweight who also have at least one weight-related health condition, such as high blood pressure or high cholesterol
- Adults with obesity or overweight and established cardiovascular disease, to reduce the risk of major heart events like heart attack or stroke
The injectable form of Wegovy remains available and approved for these same indications, as well as additional uses outlined in the prescribing information
What Is the Name of the Drug and What Does It Do?
- Brand name: Wegovy®
- Generic name: semaglutide
Wegovy belongs to a class of medicines called GLP-1 receptor agonists. These medicines mimic a natural hormone that helps regulate appetite and food intake. By acting on appetite centers in the brain and slowing how quickly food leaves the stomach, Wegovy helps people feel full sooner and stay full longer.
The oral tablet version delivers semaglutide in a daily pill, while the injection version delivers the same medication through a once-weekly shot.
How Does It Work?
Wegovy works by targeting the GLP-1 receptor, which plays an important role in hunger, digestion, and blood sugar control. The oral tablet:
- Reduces appetite
- Increases feelings of fullness after meals
- Helps people eat fewer calories over time
The tablet must be taken once daily on an empty stomach with a small amount of water. After taking it, patients must wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking, or taking other oral medications, which helps ensure proper absorption
How does the Wegovy Research say about the Oral Tablet?
The FDA approval of oral Wegovy is based on multiple clinical studies evaluating semaglutide for weight reduction and cardiovascular risk reduction. In these studies:
- Adults taking semaglutide experienced significant and sustained weight loss compared with placebo
- Weight loss was maintained over the long term when combined with diet and physical activity
- In adults with cardiovascular disease and obesity or overweight, semaglutide reduced the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events, including heart attack and stroke
The tablet form follows a gradual dose-escalation schedule, which helps reduce stomach-related side effects. Clinical trial data showed that the oral formulation achieved meaningful weight reduction while maintaining a safety profile consistent with other GLP-1 medications
What Are Some of the Side Effects?
The most common side effects reported with Wegovy tablets include:
- Nausea
- Diarrhea
- Vomiting
- Constipation
- Abdominal pain
- Headache and fatigue
More serious warnings include:
- Risk of thyroid C-cell tumors (Wegovy should not be used in people with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN 2)
- Pancreatitis
- Gallbladder disease
- Low blood sugar, especially when used with insulin or certain diabetes medications
- Kidney injury related to dehydration
- Severe gastrointestinal reactions
Because of these risks, Wegovy should only be used under medical supervision.
What Are the Dosage Recommendations and How Is It Prescribed?
For the oral Wegovy tablet:
- Starting dose: 1.5 mg once daily for 30 days
- Dose is increased every 30 days (4 mg, then 9 mg)
- Maintenance dose: 25 mg once daily
The tablet must be swallowed whole and taken exactly as directed. If a patient cannot tolerate the tablet at the full dose, switching to the injectable form may be considered.
The injectable Wegovy remains available as a once-weekly option for patients who prefer injections or do not tolerate the tablet
