What is Zilbrysq prescribed for?
Zilbrysq is prescribed to treat generalized myasthenia gravis in adults who are anti-acetylcholine receptor (AChR) antibody positive.
What is the name of the drug and what does it do?
Zilbrysq, pronounced ZIL-brisk, (generic name: zilucoplan) is for generalized myasthenia gravis (MG) treatment in adults.
Myasthenia gravis (MG) is a chronic autoimmune neuromuscular disorder characterized by weakness and fatigue of the skeletal muscles.
Generalized myasthenia gravis specifically refers to a form of the condition that affects multiple muscle groups throughout the body.
How does it work?
Zilbrysq functions as a complement inhibitor, specifically targeting a component of the immune system called complement protein C5.
Zilbrysq works by blocking a protein that normally helps form a complex called C5b-9. This complex can damage the connection between nerves and muscles in people with myasthenia gravis.
By preventing this damage, Zilbrysq reduces the immune system’s attack on these connections, which helps lessen muscle weakness symptoms.
What did the research discover?
Clinical trials demonstrated that Zilbrysq significantly improves symptoms in patients with generalized myasthenia gravis.
Patients treated with Zilbrysq showed improved scores on the Myasthenia Gravis-Specific Activities of Daily Living scale, which assesses the impact of the disease on daily activities, compared to those receiving a placebo.
These improvements were observed as early as the first week of treatment and were maintained throughout the study period.
