How Common Are Belching Disorders and What Causes Them?

Mar 27, 2025

What Did the Research Discover?

Researchers in Japan conducted a large online survey with 10,000 adults to study how common belching disorders are and what factors might be linked to them.

The study found that 1.5% of participants (151 people) had belching disorders. These conditions, which cause frequent and bothersome belching, are classified as gastroduodenal disorders (conditions affecting the stomach and small intestine).

Certain health conditions and eating habits were linked to a higher chance of having a belching disorder. People with acid reflux (GERD), reflux esophagitis, thyroid disease, or functional dyspepsia (a chronic stomach disorder) were more likely to have excessive belching. Eating habits also played a role—both eating too much at once and chewing too little or too much were associated with belching disorders.

How Can I Apply This Information?

This study helps doctors better understand how common belching disorders are and which factors may increase the risk. If you experience frequent, bothersome belching, it might be more than just a normal reaction to food.

People with acid reflux, thyroid issues, or chronic stomach discomfort should be aware that they may be at a higher risk of developing belching disorders. Paying attention to eating habits, such as chewing food properly and not overeating, may help reduce belching symptoms.

If belching is interfering with your daily life, talk to a doctor to check for underlying health conditions and discuss possible treatments.
